Thoroughbred racing received some positive news today with the announcement of funding for an additional 7 days of racing during the month of August. The funds are in the form of a loan from prominent trainer and owner Glen Todd. David Milburn, President of HBPA of BC, said “this is great news and the first step in extending our season into the fall.”
“We had no funds to race at Hastings after August 2nd and the 7 added days means we can now run until August 31. Our thanks goes out to Glen, for stepping up to the plate,” added Milburn.
Harness Racing BC and HBPA of BC have been engaged in discussions with government MLA’s for some time about the impact of the COVID pandemic on horse racing. Now the groups are talking to the Premier’s office to see if some government support can be provided to get both breeds through 2021. “All we need is a little assistance and we will get through 2021 and be able to see a bright future for 2022” said Nigel Holmes, HRBC Executive Director.
“We are continuing to work hard to make the case with government for some form of assistance for both breeds so trainers and owners can plan the balance of 2021”
